What is Neurology?

Neurology is the study and treatment of medical (as opposed to surgical) problems of the nervous system. This specialty has become increasingly broad as more information has been gathered. Fortunately, Neurology has progressed from a descriptive specialty (one that describes and diagnoses a disease) to an interventional specialty (diagnosis and treatment). Areas of neurology include stroke, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, movement disorders, autoimmune disorders and sleep disorders.

Training for the specialty of neurology includes the basic medical school, a first year of internal medicine and three more years of neurological residency. The certification for neurology is by examination. Both written and practical examination of patients are included in the certification exam.
